Everlyn Nicodemus, Självporträtt, Åkersberga (Self-portrait, Akersberga), 1982
Everlyn Nicodemus was born in Tanzania, in eastern Africa. She moved to Sweden in 1973, when she was 19 years old. There, she encountered racism for the first time in her life. She said that before she moved to Europe, she didn't know what it felt like to be 'other' and to not belong.
She said that "when I came to Sweden, it was the first time I looked at my skin and said, “Ah, I’m Black.”’
Why do you think Nicodemus chose to paint herself with multiple faces? Do you think she might have struggled to express her identity in a place where she didn't feel understood?
