Frida Kahlo, Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird, 1940
CONTEXT CLUES:
Frida Kahlo first began painting while bedridden due to a bus accident that left her seriously injured. Her self-portraits were an outlet for the physical and mental pain she was dealing with - in addition to being permanently disabled after the injury, she was also unable to have children. This particular portrait was made shortly her marriage ended in divorce.
Kahlo's paintings are deeply symbolic - everything in the picture has meaning. While you may not know the meaning behind every animal and object, what can you figure out just by looking at it? Frida has a blank expression, thorns around her neck causing her to bleed, and a dead bird hanging from them.
