Lois Mailou Jones, Self Portrait, 1940
CONTEXT CLUES:
Jones was raised in Boston by working-class parents who emphasized the importance of education and hard work. She became an art teacher for many years, before changing her focus to working on her own art.
She faced both racial and gender bias during her life. Early in her career, a museum in Boston refused to hire her, telling her to move south where "her people" lived. Despite this, Jones still found comfort in her culture and heritage. In this self-portrait you can see two traditional African sculptures behind her.
