Louis-Leopold Boilly, Grimacing Man (Self Portrait), 1822-1823
CONTEXT CLUES:
Boilly made a variety of portraits and self-portraits both serious and silly. He painted quite a few caricatures - artworks where faces and expressions are greatly exaggerated.
While self-portraits are often meant to tell us about the artist who made them, sometimes artists use their own face just to study expressions and how the face moves. It's easier to get a mirror than it is to find a friend who's always available to sit around and let you draw them whenever you want!
